Ngāti Hei Kaumatua Peter Johnston describes stories about Ahuahu (Great Mercury Island) as one of the earliest arrival points of waka. He explains Ahuahu’s importance as a place where kumara was maintained by minders Ngāti Hei, through rock gardens, store houses and terraces. He also talks about the connections between Kupe and Te Arawa, their may have been more than one Kupe and the discovery (and naming) of Aotearoa by Kupe.
